The Bengal tiger population has grown from 121 individuals in 2009 to over 355 today – Nepal achieving its tiger-doubling target ahead of schedule. The one-horned rhinoceros, once hunted to near extinction (fewer than 100 in the 1960s), now numbers over 750 in Nepal's protected areas. Wild elephants, leopards, sloth bears, gharial crocodiles and over 900 bird species inhabit landscapes that have been protected and allowed to recover over 50 years. For a wildlife traveller, this combination of genuine density and extraordinary conservation success makes Nepal one of the most rewarding destinations in Asia.

Chitwan National Park

Nepal's original and most visited wildlife park. 952km² of UNESCO-protected forest and grassland in the inner Terai, with 700+ rhinos, 250+ tigers, wild elephants, leopards and 600+ bird species. Bardia National Park

Nepal's largest and wildest park in the far western Terai. 968km² of undisturbed jungle with Nepal's densest tiger population and virtually no tourist crowds.
