Dhulikhel (1,550m) sits 30km east of Kathmandu on the ancient trade route to Tibet, overlooking the eastern Kathmandu Valley with one of the broadest Himalayan panoramas available from any low-altitude viewpoint in Nepal. On a clear morning, more than twenty peaks are visible: Annapurna (8,091m), Ganesh Himal (7,422m), Langtang (7,234m), Gaurishanker (7,134m), Dorje Lakpa and Melungtse, with the Lhotse–Everest massif visible on the far eastern horizon in the finest conditions. It is a view that stops conversation.
Beyond the scenery, Dhulikhel's most compelling reason to visit is Dwarika's Resort – Nepal's finest wellness retreat and one of the most thoughtfully designed luxury properties in South Asia. Built almost entirely from natural materials (stone, wood, earth) in a forested hillside above the valley, the resort offers genuine Ayurvedic treatment programmes, yoga and meditation, therapeutic herbal baths, Tibetan healing practices and holistic spa therapies delivered by resident specialists. For travellers seeking a wellness experience with real depth rather than a hotel spa with wellness branding, Dwarika's Resort Dhulikhel has no peer in Nepal.
The most important day trip from Dhulikhel is to Namobuddha – one of the three holiest Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal. The 3-hour hike from Dhulikhel through forest and Newari villages to the hilltop stupa is one of the finest walks near Kathmandu: constant mountain views, genuine rural Nepali life along the trail, and arrival at a site of extraordinary spiritual significance. The stupa is built over the remains of the Bodhisattva prince Mahasattva, and the large active monastery nearby houses hundreds of monks. The walk can be extended to the medieval town of Panauti (2 further hours), making a superb full-day cultural and natural circuit.
Panauti, 16km south of Dhulikhel, is one of Nepal's best-preserved medieval Newari towns and one of the least visited by tourists. The temple complex at the confluence of two sacred rivers – the Roshi and Punyamata – contains outstanding architecture from the 14th to 17th centuries. The Indreshwar Mahadev temple, Brahmayani temple and the ancient cremation ghats are all remarkable. Panauti has genuine local character that hasn't been shaped by tourism.
Dhulikhel is an excellent walking base. The 20-minute walk from most hotels to the main Himalayan viewpoint is suitable for all fitness levels and rewards with the full mountain panorama. Longer walks to Namobuddha and Panauti are moderate hikes through beautiful countryside. Our guides can lead custom walks calibrated to your fitness level and time.
Dhulikhel is 30km east of Kathmandu – 45 minutes to 1 hour by private vehicle on the Araniko Highway. It makes a comfortable overnight stay from Kathmandu, and is easily combined with visits to Bhaktapur (20 minutes by road) and a Namobuddha day hike. We arrange all transfers and can combine Dhulikhel with any Kathmandu Valley itinerary.
