Featured amenities include a 24-hour business center, express check-in, and complimentary newspapers in the lobby. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available on request), and free self parking is available onsite.

Location

At the back of a deserted 19th-century palace, Kaiser Mahal, on the fringe of the tourist enclave of Thamel, the Fairfield stands at the end of a narrow lane running back from the main road. The Garden of Dreams, Kathmandu’s most pristine park, lies just around the corner. Given optimum traffic conditions, the airport is about 15 minutes' drive.

Service & facilities

The youthful, energetic staff could well be advertising toothpaste as they dash about their daily (or nightly) tasks, while the mildly grizzled doormen never fail to issue a profound welcome or farewell. Facilities are limited to a convenience store in the lobby, a couple of meeting rooms, and a smallish fitness centre with cardiovascular machinery and free weights.

Rooms

The 115 rooms come with a choice of twin or king-sized beds, both exceptionally comfortable, and watched over by a sepia photo of Swyambunath, one of Kathmandu’s shrines. Rooms facing south get a view of the palace. The upper floors afford an intriguing glimpse of Nepalese life on neighbouring rooftops.

The rooms are not overly large – there’s just space for bed, desk, armchair and cupboard plus safety box; while the bathroom features a powerful shower to one side of the sink, and a toilet on the other. The television picks up a couple of dozen channels.

Food & drink

Food is concentrated on the ground-floor Kava restaurant and bar, which is flanked by a semi al fresco “terrace”, open to the elements but sheltered by a glass roof. The breakfast buffet is a judicious mix of Asian and Western – congee for the Chinese palate, cereal for Western, spicy spuds for subcontinental, eggs and sticky buns for everyone. Guests can also order à la carte pancakes, stuffed paratha and freshly squeezed juice which makes a mockery of the tinned stuff set out on the buffet.

Kava is open 24 hours, and the chef’s brigade turn their hands to mezze, Murgh Methi Malai (chicken with fenugreek and clotted cream) and the like with equal facility at lunch and supper. The bar is at the restaurant entrance with limited seating – it’s more comfortable out on the terrace.
